Wednesday, July 29th, 1987: His goal at twenty was to win twenty games one year, pitch until he was
thirty, win the league pennant and to make some money. Well, Jesse Hudson did something even better -- the 39-year-old St. Louis Cardinals star has now won 300 games in his career. That put him in a very select group of pitchers in the 300 club.
He joined that exclusive club today at Busch Stadium by whipping the Chicago (N) Cubs 5-3, holding them to 5 hits in 8 innings while chalking up 3 strikeouts and 3 walks. Only fitting that he should notch his 300th against the team he broke in with and played 15 seasons for.
In
the postgame interview, the modest Hudson said, "It's special to win
300 games. You don't do it by yourself. You do it with good stuff and a
good bullpen. You are only as good as the guys behind you. Years from
now I might look back on it and give myself a little pat on the back."
Hudson has rolled up a 300-88 career record and he boasts a lifetime ERA of 2.00. |

Tuesday, July 28th, 1987: Kevin Seitzer was a tough out and went 5 for 5 against Los Angeles (N) in a fine hitting display. But the Dodgers still managed to beat the New York (N) Mets 11-7.
"I
got my pitches and I connected. They all found the right holes on the
diamond. Some days you hit shots and they're right at somebody...and
some days they fall in." Seitzer also added, "And some days you lose, no matter how well you play. 5 hits in a game ought to win it."
Don't know if it is any consolation to him, but he will get his name put in the record books.
K. Seitzer singled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, doubled in the 4th, singled in the 7th and doubled in the 8th.
This season Seitzer is batting .327 with 133 hits, 9 home runs, 58 RBIs, .389 OBP and has scored 71 runs. |

Saturday, July 4th, 1987: It was a special day for Sixto Lezcano. He hit for the cycle, belting out every kind of hit there is in a baseball game -- single, double, triple, home run. The St. Louis left fielder accomplished the rare feat during his team's 9-5 victory over the Los Angeles (N) Dodgers.
He
told the SION reporters at the postgame press conference, "I never even
thought about hitting a cycle and whatta you know, I did it. The cycle
really doesn't matter to me, it is the 4 hits and the win that are
important. But I guess it will be nice to see my name listed in the
record book."
Lezcano went 4-4 in the game.
S. Lezcano singled in the 1st, walked in the 2nd, hit a solo-shot off M. Moore in the 5th, hit an RBI triple in the 6th and doubled in the 8th.
His current batting average stands at .310 and he has chalked up 8 home runs and 50 RBIs. |
