Monday, September 28th, 1998: Detroit fans adore right fielder Ben Grieve -- and for good reason -- the Tigers slugger completed a phenomenal season by winning the prestigious Triple Crown. He's the 6th player in MLB history ever to do it. The 22-year-old Grieve led the American League in batting average, home runs and RBIs.

"To win this honor is beyond belief," he said. "Just to lead in one of the categories is great. To lead in all three is unbelievable."

No one will soon forget the mammoth numbers he put up this season: a .364 average with 37 home runs and 187 runs batted in.

Saturday, September 19th, 1998: Chuck Finley of the Red Sox was standing behind the mound when the scoreboard caught his eye, confirming what he already knew... he was one out from a no-hitter. He froze... for a couple of seconds he didn't move.

"This hitter is the last one," Finley told himself. Then he collected himself and finished one of his greatest performances ever.

The Boston hurler no-hit the Chicago (A) White Sox 4-0 at Fenway Park II, finishing with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts, facing only 29 batters.

Finley admitted to the press, "I knew from the fifth inning on it was a no-hitter, but really didn't worry about it until the last out. I just wanted to win the game until then... then I wanted the no-hitter, too."

In 1998, Finley has chalked up 16 wins and 10 losses in 31 starts with 134 strikeouts in 214.2 innings and a 2.81 ERA.

Tuesday, September 15th, 1998: Chicago (N) right fielder Shane Mack could miss the remainder of the season because of a strained elbow ligament. He exited yesterday's San Diego game after injuring himself while throwing the ball. The original diagnosis said Mack would be out 3 months. Later on his doctors said he could be out even longer.

"He's done," his manager commented at the BNN press conference. "It's a season-ending injury, but it could have been worse. It's not the worst-case scenario, so we're happy about that."

Presently Mack is batting .295 and has collected 11 home runs, 45 RBIs, .372 OBP and scored 54 runs.
